Bhimsen

Bhimsen is a male given name used in parts of South Asia, notably in Nepal and India. The name is associated with historical and cultural figures and is sometimes rendered as Bhimsen or Bhimsen depending on language and region. It is commonly linked to the name Bhima from the Mahabharata, though contemporary usage is varied and not tied to a single meaning.

Bhimsen Thapa (1776–1839) was a prominent Nepalese statesman who served as Mukhtiyar, the de facto head of government, from 1804 and remained a dominant figure in Nepalese politics for decades. His administration sought to centralize power and resist encroachment by neighboring states, but his influence ended after a palace coup in 1837; he was executed in 1839.

Bhimsen Joshi (1922–2011) was an Indian Hindustani classical vocalist widely regarded as one of the leading exponents of the 20th century. Born in Gadag, Karnataka, he became a prominent figure in Hindustani music and contributed to the popularization of classical singing through concerts and recordings. He received numerous honors for his work and left a lasting impact on Indian classical music.
