Bhandars

Bhandars are traditional storage structures found in various parts of India, particularly in rural areas. The term 'bhandar' is derived from the Sanskrit word 'bhandagar', meaning repository or storehouse. These structures were historically designed for the safe storage of grains, pulses, spices, and other essential commodities, ensuring food security for households and communities.

The design and construction of bhandars varied significantly based on regional climate, available materials, and specific storage needs. Common materials used included mud, bamboo, wood, and sometimes stone. Many bhandars were built to be rodent-proof and protected from moisture and pests, employing techniques such as raised platforms, airtight seals, and natural repellents.

In some communities, bhandars also served a social and economic function. Village bhandars, for instance, could be communal storehouses where villagers contributed a portion of their harvest. These shared resources were then used to support families during lean periods, fund community projects, or provide relief during times of famine. The management of these communal bhandars often involved village elders or a designated committee.

While modern storage solutions have become widespread, traditional bhandars continue to be used in some rural households for their cultural significance and their effectiveness in preserving certain types of food items. They represent an important aspect of India's agricultural heritage and traditional knowledge systems related to food preservation and community sustenance.
