Beyond-mean-field refers to a group of theoretical approaches that extend mean-field theories by including correlations and fluctuations neglected at the mean-field level. While mean-field methods describe average fields created by particles, beyond-mean-field techniques account for dynamic correlations, collective motions, and symmetry effects that shape the properties of many-body systems. The term is used across physics, notably in nuclear structure, quantum chemistry, and condensed matter.

Common beyond-mean-field methods include symmetry restoration, where broken symmetries in a mean-field solution (such as particle number or angular momentum) are restored; configuration interaction and multi-reference approaches that mix multiple Slater determinants; the generator coordinate method and collective Hamiltonians for large-amplitude motion; and advanced many-body techniques such as coupled cluster theory, Green's function methods, and quantum Monte Carlo that go beyond simple mean-field approximations. In electronic structure, methods like GW account for dynamic screening and correlation beyond standard DFT.

Applications span nuclear structure, where these methods improve predictions of binding energies, spectra, and fission barriers; quantum chemistry and materials science for strongly correlated electrons; and ultracold atomic gases, where fluctuations and fragmentation are essential. Beyond-mean-field theories connect microscopic interactions to observable properties by incorporating fluctuations, symmetry, and correlation.

Challenges include substantial computational cost, the need to select appropriate collective coordinates and reference states, potential double counting of correlations, and reliance on effective interactions. Ongoing work seeks scalable algorithms, better interactions, and robust ways to combine diverse beyond-mean-field ingredients.
