Betasugárzásért is a Hungarian term that translates to "for beta radiation" or "beta radiation." It refers to the phenomenon of beta decay, a type of radioactive decay in which a beta particle (an electron or a positron) is emitted from an atomic nucleus. This process occurs when a neutron in the nucleus transforms into a proton, or vice versa, accompanied by the emission of a beta particle and an antineutrino or neutrino.

Beta decay plays a crucial role in nuclear physics and has several applications. It is responsible for the transmutation of elements, as the atomic number of the nucleus changes by one unit during the decay. For instance, the decay of carbon-14 to nitrogen-14 is the basis for radiocarbon dating, a technique used to determine the age of organic materials. In medicine, beta-emitting isotopes are employed in diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy. For example, iodine-131 is used to treat thyroid cancer, and technetium-99m is widely used in nuclear medicine scans.

The properties of beta radiation, such as its penetration power and ionizing ability, are important considerations when working with radioactive materials. Beta particles are more penetrating than alpha particles but less so than gamma rays. They can cause ionization, meaning they can knock electrons out of atoms, which can lead to biological damage if absorbed by living tissues. Consequently, appropriate shielding and safety measures are necessary when handling beta emitters.
