Betapositionen

Betapositionen, or beta positions, designate locations in a molecule that are beta relative to a defined reference group. In most contexts, the alpha position is the atom directly attached to the reference center; beta positions are the next ones two bonds away. In organic chemistry this usually means carbon atoms two bonds from a functional group such as a carbonyl, a halogen, or an aromatic center. In larger or cyclic systems there can be several beta positions, depending on the reference point and the molecular framework.

Betapositionen are important for understanding reactivity and mechanisms. For example, in beta-elimination reactions a leaving group at the alpha position and a hydrogen on a beta position participate to form a double bond.
