Betacsellákban

Betacsellákban is a Hungarian term that translates to "in beta-cells" in English. Beta-cells are specialized cells found in the islets of Langerhans within the pancreas. Their primary function is the synthesis, storage, and secretion of insulin, a crucial hormone that regulates blood glucose levels.

These endocrine cells play a vital role in maintaining glucose homeostasis. When blood sugar rises, such as after a meal, beta-cells release insulin. Insulin then facilitates the uptake of glucose from the bloodstream into cells, particularly liver, muscle, and fat cells, thereby lowering blood glucose. Conversely, when blood sugar drops, insulin secretion is reduced.

Disruptions in beta-cell function or a significant loss of beta-cells are central to the development of diabetes mellitus. In type 1 diabetes, the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys beta-cells, leading to absolute insulin deficiency. In type 2 diabetes, there is often a combination of insulin resistance and a progressive decline in beta-cell function and mass. Research into beta-cell biology is ongoing, aiming to understand their development, function, and susceptibility to disease, with the goal of developing new therapeutic strategies for diabetes.
