Bestämbar

Bestämbar is a Swedish word that translates to "determinable" or "decidable" in English. It is most commonly used in the context of mathematics and logic, referring to problems or quantities that can be definitively solved or known.

In mathematics, a problem is bestämbar if there exists a definite algorithm or procedure that can determine its solution in a finite number of steps. This concept is closely related to the field of computability theory, where it is fundamental to understanding the limits of what can be computed. For example, determining if a given number is prime is a bestämbar problem because there are well-defined algorithms for checking primality.

In formal logic, a statement is bestämbar if its truth value (true or false) can be unequivocally established. This implies that there are sufficient axioms and rules of inference within a given logical system to arrive at a definitive conclusion about the statement's validity. The Entscheidungsproblem, famously posed by David Hilbert, sought to find an algorithm that could determine the satisfiability of any given logical formula, a problem that was later proven to be undecidable.
