Bergartstypen, also known as rock types or geological rock classifications, refer to the different categories of rocks found in the Earth's crust. These classifications are primarily based on the processes involved in their formation, composition, and texture.

There are three main types of rocks: magmatic (igneous), sedimentary, and metamorphic. Magmatic rocks, or igneous rocks, form from the solidification of molten magma or lava. They are characterized by interlocking mineral crystals and include common types such as granite and basalt. These rocks can be intrusive (forming below the Earth's surface) or extrusive (cooling on the surface).

Sedimentary rocks develop from the accumulation and compaction of mineral and organic particles transported by water, wind, or ice. Over time, these particles lithify into solid rock. Typical examples include sandstone, limestone, and shale. Sedimentary rocks often contain fossils and show distinct layering, known as stratification.

Metamorphic rocks arise from the transformation of pre-existing rocks through heat, pressure, or chemically active fluids, without melting. This process, called metamorphism, alters mineral composition and textural features. Common metamorphic rocks include gneiss, schist, and marble. They often display banding or foliation due to mineral alignment.
