Beleidslinguïstisch

Beleidslinguïstisch describes the field or approach that studies language policy and planning from a linguistic perspective. It investigates how language policies are designed, implemented, and evaluated, and how they affect language use, access to education, public services, media, and social inclusion. The discipline sits at the interface of linguistics, policy studies, and law, and addresses issues such as language rights, official language status, minority and regional languages, and language standardization.

Key topics include policy formulation and reform processes; the effects of language policy on language maintenance, shift, literacy, and social equality; assessment of policy impact; critical analysis of power relations and ideologies embedded in language policies; planning processes (status planning, corpus or terminological planning, educational language planning); and policy advocacy and communication strategies. Methods often combine discourse analysis of policy texts, stakeholder interviews, surveys, and case studies in multilingual settings.

In Dutch-language contexts, beleidslinguïstisch work informs policymakers, educators, and public institutions about how policy decisions shape linguistic landscapes, and how to design policies that support linguistic diversity, equal access to services, and rights for language communities. The term may also appear as an adjective (beleidslinguïstisch onderzoek) describing research that applies linguistic methods to real-world policy questions.
