Beitin

Beitin is a Palestinian village located in the central West Bank, five miles north of Jerusalem. Administratively, it is part of the Ramallah and al-Bireh Governorate. The village is situated at an elevation of approximately 700 meters above sea level.

Historically, Beitin is widely identified with the ancient biblical site of Bethel. Bethel, meaning "House of God," is mentioned extensively in the Old Testament as a significant religious and tribal center. The site is associated with biblical figures such as Jacob, who is said to have had a dream of a ladder reaching to heaven there, and the prophet Samuel. Archaeological excavations at Beitin have uncovered evidence of settlement dating back to the Early Bronze Age, with significant remains from the Israelite, Roman, and Byzantine periods.

The modern village of Beitin has a population of several thousand residents. The economy is primarily based on agriculture, with olive groves and fruit orchards being common. The village also relies on remittances from residents working abroad and within Israel. Beitin has a mosque, a primary school, and basic health services.

The landscape surrounding Beitin is characterized by rolling hills and agricultural terraces. The village's proximity to Jerusalem has made it subject to Israeli occupation policies since 1967, including land confiscation and restrictions on movement. The village is bordered by several Israeli settlements.
