Bbehörigheten

Bbehörigheten, often written with a hyphen as B-behörigheten, is a historical term in the Swedish higher education admissions system that refers to a form of eligibility based on completing certain secondary school courses at the so-called B level (as opposed to the A- and C-level courses in the older gymnasieskola curriculum). Historically, Swedish gymnasium used the A–B–C course nomenclature, with B-level courses including mathematics B, physics B, chemistry B, and similar. Some higher education programs accepted the completion of these B-level courses as a path to eligibility for admission, particularly in combination with other basic prerequisites.

In modern Swedish admissions, the formal terms are grundläggande behörighet (basic eligibility) and särskild behörighet (special eligibility). The use of B-behörigheten has diminished and is mostly found in historical or regional contexts. Where it appears today, B-behörigheten serves as an alternative route to demonstrate required knowledge when an applicant does not meet the standard basic eligibility, typically by proving completion of specific B-level subjects and language requirements. The exact subjects and whether this route is accepted depend on the program and university, and many institutions have migrated to the current framework.

Applicants should check with the admissions office or contact Universitets- och högskolerådet (UHR) for current rules. In practice, most programs specify grundläggande behörighet or särskild behörighet rather than referencing B-behörigheten, which remains a largely historical reference in Swedish higher education terminology.
