Bauchspeichel

Bauchspeichel, also known as pancreatic juice, is a clear, alkaline fluid produced by the exocrine glands of the pancreas. It plays a crucial role in digestion, aiding in the breakdown of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. The production of Bauchspeichel is stimulated by the presence of food in the small intestine, particularly chyme, which is a semi-fluid mass of partly digested food.

The primary components of Bauchspeichel include a variety of digestive enzymes. Amylase is responsible for breaking down complex carbohydrates into simpler sugars. Proteases, such as trypsin and chymotrypsin, work to hydrolyze proteins into amino acids. Lipase is the key enzyme for fat digestion, breaking down triglycerides into fatty acids and glycerol.

In addition to enzymes, Bauchspeichel contains bicarbonate ions. These ions are essential for neutralizing the acidic chyme entering the duodenum from the stomach. This neutralization creates an optimal pH environment for the digestive enzymes in the small intestine to function effectively. Without the alkaline nature of Bauchspeichel, these enzymes would be less active, and digestion would be significantly impaired.

Bauchspeichel is secreted into the pancreatic duct, which then merges with the common bile duct before emptying into the duodenum. The flow of Bauchspeichel is regulated by hormonal signals, such as secretin and cholecystokinin, which are released in response to the digestive process. A healthy pancreas produces approximately 1 to 1.5 liters of Bauchspeichel daily, ensuring efficient nutrient absorption. Disruptions in the production or flow of Bauchspeichel can lead to maldigestion and related health issues.
