Batonger

Batonger is a term that refers to a type of traditional Philippine sailing vessel. These boats are typically made of wood and are characterized by their distinctive outriggers, which provide stability on the water. Batongers were historically used for fishing and inter-island trade in the archipelagic nation. The design of the batonger varies slightly by region, but the fundamental structure of a dug-out or planked hull with one or more outriggers remains constant.

The sails of a batonger are usually made from woven materials, such as palm leaves or abaca fiber, and are designed to capture the prevailing winds. The outriggers, known as "katig" in some dialects, are long poles extending from the main hull and connected to buoyant logs or bamboo rafts. This outrigger system allows the batonger to remain upright even in rough seas.

Historically, batongers played a crucial role in the maritime transport and economy of the Philippines. They facilitated the movement of goods and people between islands, contributing to the development of local communities and trade networks.
