Batawana

The Batawana are a Tswana-speaking ethnic group primarily residing in Botswana. They are one of the eight principal Tswana tribes, and their traditional territory is centered around the Ngamiland region in the northwest of the country. Historically, the Batawana were renowned for their strong leadership and their ability to adapt to the challenging environment of the Okavango Delta. Their traditional governance structure was a monarchy, with a chief known as the kgosi.

The history of the Batawana is closely linked to the broader history of the Tswana people and the formation of modern Botswana. They migrated into the Ngamiland area centuries ago, establishing their dominance. A significant event in their history was the split from the Bangwato, another major Tswana group, in the late 18th century, leading to the establishment of their independent chieftainship.
