Basevaluuttas are a theoretical construct used in some multi-currency payment ecosystems to provide a common reference unit for pricing and settlement. The term refers to a base currency or a small set of anchor currencies that serve as the standard against which other currencies are valued. In systems that use multiple basevaluuttas, they may rely on a weighted basket to reduce dependence on a single anchor.

In practice, each participating currency is assigned a rate that expresses how many units of that currency equal one basevaluutta. For example, if currency A has a rate of 1.25 A per basevaluutta and currency B has a rate of 0.90 B per basevaluutta, then one unit of B equals 1.25/0.90 ≈ 1.39 units of A. Conversely, one unit of A equals 1/1.25 basevaluuttas. Cross-rates between currencies are derived from their basevaluutta rates, enabling conversions without directly referencing external exchange pools.

Some implementations are centralized under a regulator or consortium, while others are algorithmic or hybrid, updating rates according to predefined rules or market activity.
