Baseparimuutoksia, often translated as base pair changes, refers to alterations in the sequence of nucleotides within a DNA molecule. DNA is composed of four nucleotide bases: adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), and thymine (T). These bases pair up specifically, with A always bonding to T, and G always bonding to C. A base pair consists of these two complementary bases.

Changes to this sequence can occur in several ways. A point mutation is the most common type, involving a single nucleotide being substituted for another, inserted, or deleted. For example, a substitution might change an A to a G. Insertions and deletions can shift the reading frame of the genetic code, potentially altering multiple subsequent amino acids in a protein. More significant changes can involve larger segments of DNA, such as duplications, deletions, inversions, or translocations, where parts of chromosomes are altered or moved.

These base pair changes are the fundamental source of genetic variation and are central to evolutionary processes. While some changes are neutral, others can have significant consequences, leading to altered protein function, which may manifest as a genetic disorder or a beneficial trait.
