Basebandviestinnän

Basebandviestinnän, also known as baseband signaling, is a method of transmitting digital data signals over a communication channel without the use of modulation. In baseband transmission, the digital signal is sent directly over the transmission medium as a series of voltage pulses. This means the signal occupies the low-frequency band of the channel, hence the name "baseband."

This technique is typically used for short-distance communication within local area networks (LANs) or for transmitting signals over cables like Ethernet. The simplicity of baseband signaling is a significant advantage, as it requires less complex hardware and processing compared to modulated signals. However, baseband transmission is susceptible to signal degradation over longer distances due to attenuation and interference.

The digital data is converted into electrical pulses, where different voltage levels or pulse widths represent the binary 0s and 1s. For example, a high voltage might represent a '1' and a low voltage a '0'. The encoding scheme used, such as Non-Return-to-Zero (NRZ) or Manchester encoding, determines how these pulses are structured. Baseband transmission is efficient for digital data but is limited by the bandwidth of the transmission medium and the distance the signal can travel before becoming too weak or distorted to be reliably interpreted.
