Barsebäck

Barsebäck is a locality in Skåne County, Sweden, situated on the western coast facing the Öresund strait. It is part of the Landskrona Municipality. Historically, the area is known for its agricultural landscape and its proximity to the sea.

The most prominent feature associated with Barsebäck is the Barsebäck Nuclear Power Plant. Construction began in the late 1960s, and the plant operated two boiling water reactors. It was a significant contributor to Sweden's electricity supply for several decades. Following the Swedish referendum on nuclear power in 1980, a decision was made to phase out nuclear energy. Barsebäck 1 was decommissioned in 1999, and Barsebäck 2 was shut down in 2005, making it one of the first nuclear power plants in Sweden to cease operations. The dismantling process is ongoing.

The village of Barsebäck itself is small, with a church dating back to the medieval period. The surrounding area offers natural beauty, including coastal paths and viewpoints. The presence of the former power plant has influenced the local economy and landscape, though efforts are being made to redevelop the site and restore the natural environment. The locality is also known for Barsebäck Golf & Country Club, which has hosted major international golf tournaments.
