Barrakka

The Barrakka refers to two prominent fortified terraces located in Valletta, Malta, known as the Upper Barrakka and the Lower Barrakka Gardens. These gardens are part of the historic fortifications and offer panoramic views of the Grand Harbour. Originally constructed in the 16th century by the Knights of Malta, the terraces served strategic military purposes and have been maintained and restored over the centuries.

The Upper Barrakka Gardens, situated on the uppermost part of Valletta’s fortifications, provide visitors with sweeping views of the harbor and the three city fortifications. The gardens feature manicured lawns, statues, and a central Bastion History Museum. The Saluting Battery, located nearby, is a popular attraction, where ceremonial cannon fire is performed regularly, recalling traditional military practices.

The Lower Barrakka Gardens, located at a lower level adjacent to the harbor, historically served as a landing point for maritime activity and firefighting. Today, it offers a more secluded setting with gardens, benches, and views of the Grand Harbour, serving as a peaceful retreat for visitors.

Both Barrakka Gardens are accessible via historical lifts and are significant cultural landmarks in Valletta, illustrating the city’s military and maritime heritage.
