Barrackpore
Barrackpore is a city and a municipality in the North 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is located about 25 kilometers north of Kolkata. Barrackpore is a part of the Kolkata Metropolitan Area. Historically, Barrackpore has been a significant military cantonment. It played a crucial role during the Indian Mutiny of 1857, often referred to as the Sepoy Mutiny or the First War of Indian Independence. Mangal Pandey, a sepoy in the 34th Bengal Infantry Regiment, stationed here, is famously associated with the initial spark of the rebellion in 1857. The Barrackpore Ordnance Factory is a major industrial establishment in the area. The city is situated on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, a distributary of the Ganges. Barrackpore boasts several historical sites, including the Gandhi Ghat, the Barrackpore Residency, and the Flagstaff House. The area is well-connected by road and rail, with the Barrackpore railway station being a key transportation hub. The city's administration is managed by the Barrackpore Municipality. It is a densely populated urban area with a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial activities. The presence of educational institutions and healthcare facilities serves the local population.
