Baltialaiset

Baltialaiset is a Finnish term referring to the Baltic peoples, encompassing Estonians, Latvians, and Lithuanians. These three distinct nations share a common geographical origin on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea and have a shared history, particularly in their interactions with larger neighboring powers. Linguistically, Estonian is a Finnic language, related to Finnish, while Latvian and Lithuanian are Baltic languages, belonging to the Indo-European family. Despite linguistic differences, cultural similarities and historical connections have often led to their grouping together.

The Baltic states have experienced periods of foreign rule, notably under Swedish, Polish-Lithuanian, German, and Russian empires. Their struggles for independence have been a significant theme in their modern history, with periods of self-determination followed by occupations. The restoration of independence for Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania in the late 20th century marked a pivotal moment, leading to their integration into Western political and economic structures, including membership in the European Union and NATO.
