Ballastiveden

Ballastiveden is a coastal landscape and protected area located on the western shore of the Nordhaven archipelago. The name blends ballast, the heavy stones historically used to stabilize sailing ships, with veden, an older term denoting a field or heath. The site is notable for its shoreline features, preserved ballast deposits, and a shoreline ecosystem shaped by wind and wave action.

Geography and geology

The coastal stretch extends several kilometers, with low cliffs and a mosaic of sand, clay, and ballast gravels. Exposed sections reveal layers left by glacial processes and subsequent marine sedimentation.
