Balkhash
Balkhash is a large, shallow lake located in southeastern Kazakhstan, near the border with China. It is the largest lake in the country and the second-largest in Central Asia, after the Aral Sea. The lake is part of the Syr Darya river basin and is fed by the Ili River, which flows into it from the north. The lake's surface area varies seasonally, ranging from about 1,600 square kilometers in winter to over 10,000 square kilometers in summer. The lake is known for its unique ecosystem, which includes a variety of fish species, birds, and other wildlife. It is also an important source of water for irrigation and drinking water for the surrounding region. The lake's water level has been declining in recent years due to increased water extraction for irrigation and other uses. Efforts are underway to manage the lake's water resources more sustainably and to protect its ecosystem.
