Bakteríu are single-celled microorganisms that are found in virtually every environment on Earth. They are incredibly diverse and can vary greatly in size, shape, and metabolic capabilities. Bacterial cells are prokaryotic, meaning they lack a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles. Their genetic material, typically a circular chromosome, is located in a region called the nucleoid. Bacteria possess a cell wall, which provides structural support and protection, and a cell membrane that regulates the passage of substances into and out of the cell. Some bacteria also have flagella, whip-like appendages that aid in motility, or pili, which are involved in attachment and genetic exchange.

Bacteria reproduce asexually, primarily through binary fission, where a single cell divides into two identical daughter cells. This rapid reproduction allows bacterial populations to grow exponentially under favorable conditions. Their metabolic diversity is vast; some bacteria are autotrophs, producing their own food through photosynthesis or chemosynthesis, while others are heterotrophs, obtaining nutrients from organic matter.

The study of bacteria, known as bacteriology, is a crucial branch of microbiology. Understanding bacterial biology is essential for medicine, agriculture, biotechnology, and environmental science. For instance, bacteria play vital roles in nutrient cycling, decomposition, and the production of antibiotics and other valuable compounds. Conversely, identifying and controlling pathogenic bacteria is paramount for public health.
