Baijnath

Baijnath is a town and a municipality in the Kangra district of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It is located in the Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas, approximately 50 kilometers from Dharamshala. The town is primarily known for the Baijnath Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site under consideration, dedicated to Lord Shiva in his form as Baijnath, the lord of doctors.

The Baijnath Temple is an ancient stone temple that dates back to the 13th century. Its architecture is a significant example of Nagara style. Legend states that Ravana, the king of Lanka, worshipped Lord Shiva at this spot to gain boons. The temple complex also houses a pond, believed to have healing properties.

Beyond its religious significance, Baijnath is a gateway to several trekking routes and popular tourist destinations in the Kangra valley, including Bir Billing, known for paragliding. The town offers basic amenities for visitors and is a starting point for exploring the natural beauty and spiritual heritage of the region. The local economy is largely dependent on agriculture and tourism. The nearest airport is Gaggal Airport, and the closest railway station is Pathankot.
