Operationally, backnessfront can be treated as either a single scalar feature or as a two-part scheme in which a primary axis transduces tongue advancement and a secondary cue refines mid vowels. Analysts may link the axis to acoustic correlates such as formant frequencies or spectral tilt, while phonological processes like assimilation or rounding could be described as movements along or across the single dimension.

Critics note that backness and frontness reflect distinct articulatory and perceptual properties, interacting with lip rounding, jaw height, and tongue shape in different ways. Collapsing them risks loss of descriptive power for certain languages and can complicate cross-language comparisons.
