BTEXstoffer

BTEXstoffe is a collective term for four aromatic hydrocarbons: benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes. These compounds are naturally occurring in crude oil and are also produced during the refining of petroleum and the processing of natural gas. They are volatile, meaning they evaporate easily into the air, and are colorless liquids with a characteristic sweet, aromatic odor.

Benzene is a known carcinogen and is regulated by environmental agencies due to its health risks. Toluene and ethylbenzene are less toxic than benzene but can still cause adverse health effects with prolonged exposure, including neurological symptoms and respiratory irritation. Xylenes exist in three isomeric forms (ortho-, meta-, and para-xylene) and can also cause irritation and central nervous system depression.

BTEXstoffe are commonly found in gasoline and are released into the environment through vehicle emissions, evaporation from fuel storage and transfer operations, and industrial processes such as chemical manufacturing and oil refining. They can also be present in cigarette smoke. Due to their volatility and widespread use, BTEXstoffe are a common component of air pollution.

Exposure to BTEXstoffe can occur through inhalation, skin contact, or ingestion. In the environment, they can contaminate soil and groundwater, posing risks to ecosystems and human health. Various methods are employed for their detection and remediation, including air monitoring, soil sampling, and specialized cleanup technologies.
