BREEAMNL

BREEAM-NL is the Dutch adaptation of the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM). It provides a framework for assessing the sustainability performance of buildings and, in some variants, neighborhoods and portfolios. The scheme is developed and maintained through a collaboration between the Dutch Green Building Council (DGBC) and BRE, under license from BRE, to reflect Dutch climate, regulations, and building practice.

Projects are evaluated across multiple categories using a credit-based system. Standard categories in BREEAM-NL include Management, Energy, Transport, Water, Materials, Waste, Land Use and Ecology, Health and Wellbeing, Pollution, and Innovation. The assessment applies to different schemes or modules such as New Build, Major Renovation, and In-Use (existing buildings and portfolios). The total score determines a rating band, typically Pass, Good, Very Good, Excellent, or Outstanding.

Certification is carried out by licensed BREEAM-NL assessors who compile evidence and submit to a verifier. For new construction, design-stage and post-construction assessments may be required. BREEAM-NL emphasizes life-cycle thinking, operational performance, and alignment with Dutch policy priorities on energy efficiency, circular economy, and climate adaptation.

Adoption and impact: BREEAM-NL is widely used by developers, asset managers, and public authorities in the Netherlands to demonstrate sustainability credentials and support procurement and regulatory compliance. It has contributed to international recognition of BREEAM and serves as a benchmark for sustainable building practice within the Dutch market.
