BIBOstöðugleiki is an Icelandic term that translates to "BIBO stability" in English. BIBO stands for "Bounded Input, Bounded Output." This concept is fundamental in the study of systems, particularly in control theory and signal processing, to determine if a system is stable.

A system is considered BIBO stable if, for every bounded input signal applied to the system, the output signal remains bounded as well. In simpler terms, if you provide a finite, non-infinite input to a BIBO stable system, its output will also never become infinite. This is a crucial property for practical applications, as unbounded outputs can lead to system failures or undesirable behavior.

The analysis of BIBO stability often involves examining the system's transfer function, particularly its poles. For a linear time-invariant (LTI) system, BIBO stability is achieved if and only if all the poles of its transfer function lie strictly within the unit circle in the complex plane for discrete-time systems, or in the left half of the complex plane for continuous-time systems.

Understanding BIBO stability is essential for designing reliable and predictable systems. It ensures that external disturbances or variations in input signals do not cause the system's output to grow uncontrollably, which is a desirable characteristic in many engineering and scientific domains.
