BGN

BGN is the ISO 4217 currency code for the Bulgarian lev, the official currency of Bulgaria. The lev is subdivided into 100 stotinki, and its banknotes and coins are issued by the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB).

Since 1999, Bulgaria has maintained a currency board arrangement that fixes the exchange rate to the euro at 1 euro = 1.95583 BGN. This peg anchors the lev to the euro and has been a central feature of Bulgaria’s monetary stability following the inflation crisis of the 1990s. The BNB oversees monetary policy within this framework and ensures the availability of currency in circulation, while also regulating financial institutions and payment systems.

The lev is used for all legal tender transactions in Bulgaria and is widely accepted in cash and electronic payments. Bulgaria joined the European Union in 2007, and while it plans to move toward euro adoption in the future, the Bulgarian lev remains the country’s active currency as of today. In international finance and currency markets, BGN appears as the currency code for quotes, pricing, and settlements involving Bulgarian monetary transactions.
