The proscenium stage is one of the most common types. It features a rectangular opening, the proscenium arch, which frames the stage and separates the audience from the performers. This creates a clear distinction and is well-suited for traditional plays and spectacles. Thrust stages, also known as three-quarter stages, extend into the audience, with the audience seated on three sides. This configuration allows for a more intimate connection between performers and spectators. Arena stages, or theatre-in-the-round, have the audience seated on all sides of the stage, creating a highly immersive experience.

Other stage types include the black box theatre, which is a simple, versatile room that can be configured in various ways, often used for experimental or intimate productions. Found spaces, or unconventional stages, utilize existing locations like warehouses, streets, or parks for performances, offering unique site-specific experiences. Flexible stages, as the name suggests, can be adapted to various configurations, offering adaptability for diverse performance needs.
