Axonální refers to anything pertaining to an axon. An axon is a long, slender projection of a nerve cell, or neuron, that typically conducts electrical impulses known as action potentials away from the neuronal cell body. Axons are the primary transmission lines of the nervous system, carrying signals to other neurons, muscles, or glands. The term "axonální" is used in various contexts within neurobiology and neuroscience.

Axonální transport, for instance, describes the movement of molecules and organelles along the axon. This transport is essential for maintaining the axon's structure and function, as it allows for the delivery of proteins, lipids, and other vital components from the cell body to the axon terminals and also for the return of waste materials. There are two main types: anterograde transport, moving away from the cell body, and retrograde transport, moving towards the cell body.

Damage to axons, known as axonopathy, can have significant consequences for neural function. This damage can occur due to injury, disease, or toxic substances and can lead to a range of neurological deficits. The study of axonální structures and processes is crucial for understanding how the nervous system operates and for developing treatments for neurological disorders.
