Axonid

Axonid is a genus of extinct marine chordates belonging to the class Pteraspidomorphi, known from fossil records dating back to the Silurian period, approximately 430 million years ago. These early vertebrate-like organisms are characterized by their armored, elongated body and a distinct head shield. Axonids are considered to be among the earliest vertebrate ancestors, providing valuable insights into the evolution of complex skeletal structures and sensory systems.
