Avskillelsen

Avskillelsen is a Norwegian term that translates to "the separation" or "the secession." It most commonly refers to the historical event of Norway's dissolution of its union with Sweden on June 7, 1905. This marked the end of the personal union that had existed since 1814, when Norway was ceded to Sweden after the Napoleonic Wars.

The path to Avskillelsen was a complex one, fueled by growing Norwegian nationalism and a desire for greater autonomy. Norway had its own constitution and parliament, but the union government in Stockholm held significant power, particularly in foreign affairs. Disagreements over consular services and the establishment of a separate Norwegian consul system became a major point of contention.

In 1905, the Norwegian Storting declared the union dissolved, citing the Swedish king's inability to form a government acceptable to Norway. This was met with considerable tension and a period of diplomatic negotiation. Through a process of plebiscite and eventual referendum, Norway solidified its independence. Ultimately, a peaceful resolution was reached, and Prince Carl of Denmark was elected King Haakon VII of Norway. The year 1905 is therefore a pivotal moment in modern Norwegian history, signifying the re-establishment of Norway as a sovereign state.
