Avotuli

Avotuli is Finnish for "open fire," referring to a fire lit outside of a containment such as a stove, fireplace, or built fire pit. It includes campfires, bonfires, and similar fires made in the open air.

In everyday use it is associated with outdoor recreation, camping, cooking, warmth, and social gatherings.

Regulation and safety: In Finland, avotuli is subject to fire safety rules and local regulations. Open fires may be banned during dry seasons or in areas with elevated fire risk. When permitted, fires should be lit only in approved locations, away from structures and dry vegetation. A water source and extinguishing tools should be ready, fires should be supervised, and they must be completely extinguished before leaving.

Construction and practice: Build fires on mineral soil or in a designated fire pit, keep a reasonable size, and clear the surrounding area of flammable material. Avoid windy conditions and never burn waste.

Alternatives and culture: When open fires are restricted, portable gas stoves or enclosed fireplaces provide alternatives. Open fires have been part of Nordic outdoor culture for warmth and cooking, and continue to play a role in recreational use where regulations allow.
