Avløpsvannrensing, also known as wastewater treatment, is the process of removing contaminants from domestic sewage and industrial wastewater before it is discharged back into the environment. This process is crucial for protecting public health and preventing the pollution of rivers, lakes, and oceans.

The treatment process typically involves several stages. Preliminary treatment removes large solids through screening and grit removal. Primary treatment then allows solids to settle out in large tanks, forming sludge. Secondary treatment utilizes biological processes, where microorganisms consume dissolved organic matter. This is often achieved through activated sludge processes or trickling filters. Tertiary treatment, or advanced treatment, is employed to remove specific pollutants not addressed in earlier stages, such as nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, or trace organic compounds. This can involve filtration, disinfection, or chemical precipitation.

Sludge generated during the treatment process is also treated. This often involves dewatering to reduce its volume, followed by stabilization processes like digestion. The treated sludge may then be disposed of in landfills, incinerated, or used as fertilizer if it meets regulatory standards. Disinfection, typically using chlorine, ozone, or UV radiation, is often the final step to kill any remaining pathogens before the treated water, known as effluent, is released.
