Avløpsområder, also known as drainage basins or watersheds, are geographic areas where all surface water drains into a common point, such as a river, lake, or ocean. These areas are defined by topography, with higher ground acting as boundaries, directing precipitation and runoff towards lower elevations. The concept of an avløpsområde is fundamental to understanding hydrology, water management, and environmental science.

The size of an avløpsområde can vary dramatically, from a small area draining a few acres to vast river systems that encompass thousands of square miles.
