Avaruussäteily

Avaruussäteily refers to ionizing radiation originating from outer space. It is a pervasive environmental factor encountered by astronauts in space, as well as at high altitudes on Earth and during spaceflight. This radiation is composed of several components, including galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) and solar particle events (SPEs). GCRs are high-energy particles originating from outside the solar system, primarily atomic nuclei stripped of their electrons, accelerated to near-light speeds by supernova explosions. SPEs are bursts of energetic particles, mainly protons, emitted by the Sun during solar flares and coronal mass ejections.

Exposure to avaruussäteily poses significant health risks. The high-energy particles can damage DNA, leading to an increased risk of cancer, cataracts, and central nervous system disorders. For astronauts on long-duration missions, such as those to Mars, understanding and mitigating the effects of avaruussäteily is a critical challenge for mission success and crew safety. Spacecraft shielding, biological countermeasures, and mission planning to avoid periods of intense solar activity are employed to reduce exposure. On Earth, the planet's magnetic field and atmosphere provide substantial protection, but astronauts and air travelers at high altitudes experience higher levels of radiation than those on the surface.
