Avaruusluotainten, or space probes in English, are uncrewed robotic spacecraft used for scientific exploration of celestial bodies. These probes are designed to travel beyond Earth's orbit and gather data about planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and the interplanetary medium. They are equipped with various scientific instruments such as cameras, spectrometers, magnetometers, and particle detectors to analyze the composition, atmosphere, magnetic fields, and physical characteristics of their targets.

The development of space probes began in the mid-20th century with early missions like the Soviet Luna program and the American Pioneer and Mariner programs. These initial probes paved the way for more complex and ambitious missions that have since visited every planet in our solar system and beyond. Missions can be broadly categorized into flyby missions, where the probe passes by a celestial body, orbiter missions, where the probe enters orbit around a celestial body to conduct long-term observations, and lander or rover missions, where a probe or its component touches down on the surface to conduct in-situ analysis.
