Autonomisten

Autonomisten are individuals or political actors who advocate for autonomy for a particular region, people, or community within a larger state, rather than seeking full independence. The term covers a range of positions from cultural recognition and administrative devolution to substantial self-government, depending on legal and political context. Autonomy is usually pursued through constitutional reforms, legislative measures, negotiations with central authorities, or through participation in formal political processes.

Autonomist actors distinguish themselves from separatists, who seek full sovereignty, and from federalists, who accept shared sovereignty within a federal system but may differ on powers and division of competences. They may operate as political parties, advocacy groups, or social movements, and can employ tactics such as policy proposals, referendums, or negotiation with central authorities. The success and form of autonomist projects depend on constitutional frameworks, democratization, and the balance of regional versus national interests; in some cases autonomy arrangements lead to devolution of powers and enhanced regional governance, while in others they fail to achieve meaningful reforms or face repression.

Across languages and regions, the label autonomisten is used in contexts such as Italian- and German-speaking areas to denote actors pressing for greater regional powers, and similarly in Dutch- and German-speaking political traditions.
