Automobilradachsen, often simply referred to as axles, are essential components of a vehicle's drivetrain and suspension system. Their primary function is to transmit torque from the differential to the wheels, enabling the vehicle to move. Axles also play a crucial role in supporting the vehicle's weight and maintaining the proper alignment of the wheels.

There are two main types of axles found in automobiles: live axles and dead axles. A live axle is a drive axle, meaning it rotates and transmits power to the wheels. It typically contains the differential and is responsible for both propulsion and support. In contrast, a dead axle is a non-driving axle, primarily used for supporting the vehicle's weight and providing structural integrity. It does not transmit power.

The construction of an axle can vary depending on the vehicle's design. Drive axles often consist of a housing that encloses the differential and half-shafts, which connect the differential to the wheel hubs. These half-shafts are usually equipped with universal joints or constant velocity (CV) joints to allow for changes in angle as the suspension moves and the wheels steer.

The material used for axles is typically high-strength steel to withstand the significant stresses and torsional forces they endure. Proper maintenance, including lubrication of the differential and CV joints, is vital for the longevity and smooth operation of automobile wheel axles.
