Autoimmunhämolytischer is a German term that translates to autoimmune hemolytic anemia. This condition occurs when the body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys its own red blood cells. Red blood cells are responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body, and their destruction leads to a shortage, a condition known as anemia.

The immune system normally produces antibodies to fight off foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses. In autoimmune hemolytic anemia, these antibodies are directed against antigens present on the surface of red blood cells. When these antibodies bind to red blood cells, they can trigger their destruction by various mechanisms. This destruction can happen within blood vessels (intravascular hemolysis) or within the spleen and liver (extravascular hemolysis).

The symptoms of autoimmune hemolytic anemia can vary depending on the severity of the red blood cell destruction. Common symptoms include fatigue, weakness, pale skin, shortness of breath, dizziness, and jaundice (a yellowing of the skin and eyes). In more severe cases, heart problems and organ damage can occur.

The diagnosis of autoimmune hemolytic anemia typically involves a combination of blood tests. These tests can include a complete blood count to assess the number of red blood cells, a peripheral blood smear to examine the appearance of red blood cells, and a direct antiglobulin test (DAT), also known as a Coombs test, which detects antibodies or complement proteins attached to the surface of red blood cells.

Treatment for autoimmune hemolytic anemia aims to reduce the immune system's attack on red blood cells and manage the anemia. The primary treatment often involves corticosteroids, such as prednisone, to suppress the immune response. If corticosteroids are not effective or if the condition is severe, other immunosuppressive medications may be used. In some cases, splenectomy, the surgical removal of the spleen, may be considered as the spleen is a major site of red blood cell destruction. Blood transfusions may be necessary to quickly replenish red blood cell counts in cases of severe anemia.
