Autariatae

Autariatae was a Thracian tribe that lived in the region of Moesia, in the area of modern-day Bulgaria and Serbia, during the Iron Age. Little is known about the Autariatae, as they left behind no written records. However, archaeological findings and accounts from ancient Greek and Roman historians provide some insight into their culture and history.

The Autariatae are believed to have been a powerful and influential tribe in the region. They may have been organized into a federation, with a loose system of governance and military alliances. According to the Greek historian Herodotus, the Autariatae were a semi-nomadic people who were skilled horsemen and archers.

The Autariatae are also mentioned in the work of the Roman historian Strabo, who describes them as a warlike people who inhabited the region of Moesia. The Roman historian Pliny the Elder also mentions the Autariatae, noting that they were subject to the Dacian kingdom, but paid tribute to Rome.

Archaeological evidence supports the presence of the Autariatae in the region. Excavations at the site of the ancient settlement of Panagjuriste, in modern-day Bulgaria, have uncovered a wealth of artifacts that date back to the Iron Age. These include pottery, metalwork, and other objects that suggest a high level of cultural and economic development among the Autariatae.

Despite their evident strength and influence in the region, the Autariatae are not well-represented in the historical record. Their legacy is largely forgotten, with many of the details of their culture and history lost to time.
