In many countries with a dual training system, such as Germany, Switzerland and Austria, training occurs at two main types of Ausbildungsorte: the Ausbildungsbetrieb (training company) and the Berufsschule (vocational school). The company provides hands-on, on-the-job instruction, while the school delivers theoretical instruction and broad-based education. Apprentices typically split time between these two settings, with the exact arrangement defined in the training contract and in local regulations. The combination aims to combine practical competence with foundational knowledge and problem-solving abilities.

Other forms of Ausbildungsorte include außerbetriebliche Ausbildung (out-of-firm training) and überbetriebliche Ausbildungsstätten (training centers operated by chambers or industry associations). These arrangements are used when a traditional company-based path is not feasible or when standardized training modules need to be delivered by specialized providers. In some sectors, regional or national authorities, along with chambers of commerce or crafts, may oversee and quality-check training sites to ensure compliance with Ausbildungsordnungen (training regulations).

Legal and organizational frameworks for Ausbildungsorte typically require that the site offers qualified supervision, appropriate equipment, and safe working conditions, and that it aligns with the defined skills and practical experiences of the apprenticeship. The concept remains central to the integration of trainees into the labor market, providing a bridge between classroom learning and real-world work.
