Aurutids

The Aurutids is a minor meteor shower that occurs annually between August 28 and September 5. It is named after the constellation Auriga, from which the meteors appear to radiate. The Aurutids are known for their slow-moving meteors, which can be seen streaking across the night sky at speeds of around 20 kilometers per second. The shower is not particularly active, with a zenithal hourly rate (ZHR) typically ranging from 1 to 5 meteors per hour during its peak.

The origin of the Aurutids is believed to be the comet C/1911 N1 (Kiess), which was discovered in 1911. The comet's orbit intersects with Earth's orbit, causing the debris left behind by the comet to enter Earth's atmosphere and create the meteor shower. The Aurutids are part of the Taurid Complex, a group of meteor showers that share a common origin and are associated with the Taurid meteor stream.

Observing the Aurutids can be a rewarding experience for amateur astronomers, as the shower's slow-moving meteors can be visually striking. However, the low activity of the shower means that it is not as prominent as some other meteor showers, such as the Perseids or Leonids. Despite this, the Aurutids offer a unique opportunity to observe a meteor shower that is not as well-known or widely observed as others.
