Aufwuchs

Aufwuchs is a term used in limnology and ecology to describe the community of organisms that colonize submerged surfaces in aquatic environments. It typically forms a biofilm or periphyton on rocks, aquatic plants, submerged debris, and man-made substrates. The community is diverse, comprising microalgae (notably diatoms and green algae), heterotrophic bacteria, fungi, and a range of small aquatic invertebrates such as protozoans, nematodes, and microcrustaceans.

The Aufwuchs represents a key interface between the water column and the substratum, contributing to primary production and nutrient cycling. Algae within the community perform photosynthesis, while bacteria and fungi decompose organic matter. Microfauna graze on the biofilm, transferring energy to higher trophic levels and supporting a portion of the stream or shore-based food web. The structure and composition of Aufwuchs are influenced by light, nutrient availability, water flow, substrate type, and grazing pressure.

In streams and rivers, Aufwuchs development proceeds from pioneer colonizers to more complex, layered communities with increased biodiversity over time. Substrate roughness, stability, and flow regimes shape the spatial distribution of Aufwuchs. Because many components respond to environmental conditions, Aufwuchs is frequently used as an indicator of water quality and ecological integrity. In applied contexts, biofouling on ships and pipelines is sometimes discussed under similar terms, but ecological Aufwuchs refers primarily to natural subaerial and aquatic substrates and their associated communities.
