Auftaumethoden refers to techniques used to defrost frozen items, particularly food. The primary goal of these methods is to thaw frozen food safely and effectively, minimizing the risk of bacterial growth and preserving its quality.

Commonauftaumethoden include thawing in the refrigerator, which is considered the safest method as it maintains the food at a consistently cool temperature. This method requires planning ahead as it can take several hours or even a full day depending on the size of the item. Another widely used method is thawing in cold water. This involves placing the food in a leak-proof bag and submerging it in cold tap water, changing the water every 30 minutes to ensure it remains cold. This method is faster than refrigerator thawing. For immediate use, microwave thawing is an option, but it requires cooking the food immediately after thawing as some parts may begin to cook during the microwave process.

It is generally advised against thawing food at room temperature. This is because the outer layers of the food can reach temperatures within the "danger zone" (between 40°F and 140°F or 4°C and 60°C) where bacteria multiply rapidly, even while the inside remains frozen.
