Aufklärungsflugzeug is a German term meaning reconnaissance aircraft. These are military aircraft designed primarily for aerial reconnaissance. Their mission involves gathering intelligence on enemy positions, movements, and activities without engaging in combat. Reconnaissance aircraft can be equipped with various sensors, including cameras, infrared imagers, radar, and electronic intelligence gathering equipment. The data collected is then analyzed to provide commanders with a clear understanding of the operational environment.

Reconnaissance missions can be conducted in different ways. Tactical reconnaissance focuses on immediate battlefield information, supporting ground forces. Strategic reconnaissance aims at gathering intelligence on a larger scale, often deep behind enemy lines, to inform long-term planning. The development of reconnaissance aircraft has evolved significantly over time, from early visual observation in World War I to highly sophisticated drones and satellites used today. While dedicated reconnaissance aircraft still exist, the role is increasingly being filled by multi-role aircraft capable of performing reconnaissance as one of their functions, as well as by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones.
