Atropatene
Atropatene was an ancient kingdom located in northwestern Iran, primarily in the region historically known as Media Atropates. The kingdom was founded by Atropates, a Persian nobleman who served as satrap of Media under the Achaemenid Empire. After the defeat of the Achaemenids by Alexander the Great, Atropates managed to maintain his position and later declared independence, establishing the Atropatene kingdom around the late 4th century BCE.
