Asuakseen

Asuakseen is a Finnish non-finite verb form derived from the verb asua, meaning to live. It functions as a purpose infinitive and is used to express the aim or reason for another action in the main clause, roughly equivalent to the English phrase “in order to live” or “to live in order to.”

The form is created by attaching the suffix -akseen to the verb stem, in this case yielding asuakseen. The purpose infinitive generally aligns with the subject of the main clause, so the subject of the main clause is understood to be the subject of asuakseen. This construction is most common in written Finnish and in formal or literary contexts, where it provides a concise way to state purpose.

Usage examples include: Hän muutti Suomeen asuakseen siellä. (He moved to Finland in order to live there.) Another example is: Lapsiperhe muutti maaseudulle asuakseen rauhallisessa ympäristössä. (The family moved to the countryside to live in a quiet environment.) In everyday speech, speakers are more likely to use alternative constructions to express purpose, such as clauses with jotta or other purpose expressions, rather than the -akseen form.
